چکیده

A possible explanation for the large low-energy enhancement of outer heliospheric ion and electron intensities observed at Voyager 1 (V1) during 2002/213 to 2003/035 is an encounter with the solar wind termination shock (TS) [4]. We study the energy spectra of H, He, C, & O ions around this time period and, using the anomalous cosmic ray (ACR) species scaling [2], find the enhancement to be consistent with an ACR population.

Correlation between energetic ion enhancements and heliospheric current sheet crossings in the outer heliosphere

[1] Voyagers 1 and 2 observed highly-variable beams of energetic ions in the foreshock region upstream of the termination shock (TS). At Voyager 2 (V2), the ion intensities are generally not related to the plasma properties. At Voyager 1 (V1), the beams are often coincident with crossings of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). The V1 intensity peaks occur when the HCS is crossed from negative...

Voyager 1 and 2 Observations of Magnetic Fields and Associated Cosmic-ray Variations from 2000 through 2001: 60–87 Au

We consider the cosmic and heliospheric magnetic field observations made during the years 2000 and 2001 when Voyager 1 (V1) moved from 76.1 to 87 AU at a heliographic latitude of approximately 34=5 and Voyager 2 (V2) moved from 59.8 to 69 AU at a heliographic latitude of approximately 25=5. A global merged interaction region (GMIR) containing intense fluctuating magnetic fields was observed byV...

Sudden intensity increases and radial gradient changes of cosmic ray MeV electrons and protons observed at Voyager 1 beyond 111 AU in the heliosheath

[1] Voyager 1 has entered regions of different propagation conditions for energetic cosmic rays in the outer heliosheath at a distance of about 111 AU from the Sun. The low energy 6–14 MeV galactic electron intensity increased by ~20% over a time period ≤10 days and the electron radial intensity gradient abruptly decreased from 19%/AU to 8%/AU at 2009.7 at a radial distance of 111.2 AU. At abou...

Evolution of Anomalous Cosmic-ray Oxygen and Helium Energy Spectra during the Solar Cycle 22 Recovery Phase in the Outer Heliosphere

We present annual 0.3–40 MeV nucleon 1 anomalous cosmic-ray (ACR) oxygen and helium energy spectra from the 1991–1999 cosmic-ray recovery phase of solar cycle 22. These observations were made with the Low Energy Charged Particle instruments aboard the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft while at helioradial positions ranging from 34 to 76 AU. The peak intensities of both species increased by 2 o...

Sawtooth oscillations directly driven by solar wind dynamic pressure enhancements

[1] We have examined four well-defined events of sawtooth oscillations in energetic particle flux and magnetic field at geosynchronous orbit. During all four events, nearly simultaneous energetic particle flux enhancements and magnetic field variations occurred at all MLTs for each sawtooth cycle. Geomagnetic H component data at low to middle latitude also show a global H increase simultaneousl...
